A Pet Peeve about Bolivian Web Sites

One of the benefits of running Bolivia Web is that people send me links to all kinds of cool and interesting sites related to Bolivia. Unfortunately, many Bolivian sites make it extremely difficult for the rest of the world to find them.

First, they hide behind Flash animations which don’t provide any value to the site. Second, many navigation menus are also created in Flash, so even if search engines got past the home page, they wouldn’t be able to index any pages. Take the site for Tourist Health, for example. It apparently provides a valuable service to tourists visiting Bolivia, but the site is completely invisible to Google and other search engines. Try it. Search for health insurance for tourists in Bolivia, or tourist health Bolivia, or any other search. There is no chance that you’ll find their site.

So, if you are a Bolivian web designer, please take my advice and stop using Flash. You are not helping your client or employer, and you are also irritating the rest of the world. And keep sending me links. Thank you.
